Kristi
I do appreciate that you sought me out after receiving complaints from my friends, fans, and supporters regarding the other night at Turtle Bay.
I completely understand that you have a policy regarding capacity and dresscode. My posts via Twitter, facebook, and my blog comment on how your bouncer made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I watched him let a group of gentlemen into the bar, one of whom had an identical shirt to mine.
I do have to inform you that some messages posted on my blog by your general manager truly negate any goodwill you attempted in your deflection.
I will not attempt to become a patron of Turtle Bay, nor do I plan to mention it any further. Perhaps now your establishment and staff will be hyper aware of these situations and hopefully others in the gay community of New York will avoid an uncomfortable situation like I experienced.
Nick
When I am old enough to go to gay bars, I suspect the Turtle Bay will have been closed for years with their attitude.
ReplyDeleteNick, way to go!!! I've been following this all along, and I think you did right. You did not make a scene, and you have to love the internet, you tweeked and the word spread. I have also passed your dilemma along to others via email. Their General Manager comes across as a complete ass.
ReplyDeleteKristi is a PR person, and since you are in the entertainment business, I am sure you understand how PR works.
I am happy that you put all this not only on your twitter account but on your blog, so people can see and I hope some of your entertainment buds (male and female) also pass the word.
This is the 21st Century, and discrimation of any sort should not happen. We should have learned this by our mistakes of the past.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteyet another example of "Barbarians at The Gate."
I'd love to interview on my talk show, IN THE LV. Not just about this incident, but, about your great and rather varied career in theater.
Here's a couple of links.
If you like the show, hit me up at thevegasstleguy@gmail.com or on Facebook DEREKWASHINGTON314.
We've had Lt. Dan Choi, Jeff Sharlet, Cleve Jones and The Frangela Duo on our show and would love to talk to you as well.

Bravo Nick. No reason for their behavior. I lived in that neighborhood for years and never went it (it's had several incarnations) and I never will. Sadly, if it were a race issue, there would be a lawsuit, but homophobia seems to be the last tolerated prejudice. Glad you got even. Kristi seemed embarrassed but when she said that the staff didn't remember the incident, game over. Even worse -- the idiot bouncer is probably pleased with himself.
ReplyDeleteNick,
ReplyDeleteI've posted my own thoughts about this over at Counter Closet:
